Pressestimmen

"ÝBurton¨ is, to me, a true genius and I wouldn't use that word with too many people, believe me. You can't label what he does. It's not magic, because that would imply some sort of trickery. It's not just skill, because that seems like it's learned. What he has is a very special gift that we don't see every day. It's not enough to call him a filmmaker. The rare title of 'genius' is a better fit . . . in not just film but drawings, photographs, thought, insight, and ideas . . . I have never seen someone so obviously out of place fit right in."--Johnny Depp, from the Foreword"[Burton] is, to me, a true genius and I wouldn't use that word with too many people, believe me. Synopsis

Tim Burton is one of the great modern-day visionaries of cinema, a director who has fabricated his own deliciously nightmarish universe in movies as extraordinary as Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands and Mars Attacks! - not to mention his twisted take on the tales of Batman, Sleepy Hollow, and Planet of the Apes. Coinciding with the release of his re-imagining of Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory with long-time comrade Johnny Depp, this updated and fully illustrated new edition of the definitive Burton interview book casts light on Burton's Burbank childhood, his early work at Disney, the recurrent themes and stunning designs of his movies, and the creative obsessions that fuel them. One of the best - selling books in the series, this brings his career right up to date Includes interviews on all of his most recent films, including the long awaited Charlie and the Chocolate Factory He never gives interviews, so this is the one opportunity film fans will have of hearing Tim Burton's opinions on his work

To say that Tim Burton is a visionary genius of cinema surely approaches the truth, but if you want to get an idea of all that lies behind the work of this writer/director/drawer/artist, the book "Burton on Burton" is definitely a good starting point.I loved this director since the late 80s, exactly since '89, when "Batman" was released, a movie that has also allowed us, who are on this side of the ocean, to meet him. Since then I have followed his career step by step, also returning back to see his previous movie "Beetlejuice", which is still my most seen one (I lost the count somewhere around 40), both in Italian and in the original language and which I watch again with pleasure from time to time.He made me move with "Edward Scissorhands", in which there was my (and his) first encounter with Johnny Depp, my favourite actor for over 20 years. He amused me with movies like "Mars Attacks!", "Ed Wood" and "Sleep Hollow", he made me enthusiastic with "Batman", "Batman Returns" (a little less than with the first one though) and the recent "Dark Shadows", he surprised me with "The Corpse Bride", "Nightmare Before Christmas", "Alice in Wonderland", he intrigued me with "Sweeney Todd". In some cases I was not completely satisfied, as in "Planet of the Apes". I have not seen some movies at all by choice, like "Big Fish" and "Charlie and The Chocolate Factory", or for lack of opportunity, like "Pee Wee's Big Adventure", but sooner or later I will watch them.In any case, he is without a doubt my favourite director. In his films, if on one hand you can see his touch and the presence of certain recurring themes, however, there is a wide variety of genres. We have fantasy, paranormal comedy, superhero, science fiction, animation, musical, children's story, crime story, biography. There's something for all tastes.Reading this wonderful book, in which Burton tells about himself at various stages of his career and his life, you can really understand where this variety comes from and at the same time what makes his films "Burtonian". It turns out as he often has come to make a film almost by accident and as on other occasions they were stories created by him and that he strongly desired to develop, at the cost of long waiting.Burton tells us about the often unusual genesis of certain films, such as "Nightmare Before Christmas", whose story was written step by step with the creation of the soundtrack. He talks about his partnership with Johnny Depp, Danny Elfman and with other collaborators who have often worked with him. He shows us the often ruthless world of Hollywood, to which he has always tried not to give in, claiming he wanted to do only what he was feeling in his heart, because he was simply not able to do anything else. He reveals the man behind the director, from "special" kid to talented artist, to (almost casually) director. What emerges is undoubtedly his enormous imagination combined with a strong desire to turn it into reality. This book is in my opinion a true inspiration to all those who have an artistic talent and want to find ways to use it well, without compromise. But it is also only the life of a man, the simplicity of whom is evident from the way he speaks and what he says. He does not feel and does not want to be a celebrity. He just wants to bring to life his characters and his stories. It is a true artist. As a fan and expert of Tim Burton, whilst reading this book, I have experienced almost a journey through time, going along with the periods during which he worked on his films. But I think "Burton on Burton" is a great read for any movie lover, as it offers a privileged perspective towards this world, from which many are fascinated.Excellent work by the curator, Mark Salisbury, who has expertly put together the texts taken from various interviews, alternating them with interesting explanations. Finally, I must spend a few words to the two prefaces written by Johnny Depp, who added to it a little colour, telling us about Burton from a different point of view, that one of a friend, who shared (and still shares) with him the most important part of his career as an actor.Rita Carla Francesca Monticelli, author of Red Desert - Point of No Return

A very good book about the life and movies of Tim Burton. It is filled with many of his truly wonderful drawings. This is definetely the best book about Tim Burton yet! I hope it will be updated to include Mars Atacks( which I thought was good!) and Sleepy Hollow(the best tim burton movie yet!)

I absolutely love Tim Burton and Johnny Depp, so when I saw that the book was about Tim Burton and there was an introduction by Johnny Depp, I had to buy it! The book includes the first foreword Johnny wrote for this book and it also includes the more recent foreword he wrote. With regards to the wonderful Mr. Burton, this book is a compilation of interviews put together to draw an intensely intimate portrait of him! No website or five minute interview can get more information in it than this book does. The best part about this book is that the words belong to Tim Burton; there are no assumptions of who he is and what he believes according to the writer. "Burton on Burton" chapters are broken up into the movies Tim Burton has created but it also examines what he was doing at the time, how he felt, and what he was thinking when he was in the process of creating his films. Being able to get into the mindset of Tim Burton enhances the enjoyment one acquires while watching his movies. In any case, while I believed some symbols he uses often meant one thing, Tim Burton stresses that they meant something completely beyond the metaphorical condition(s) an audience has set.Overall, I highly recommend this book to anyone willing to understand Tim Burton and his breathtaking talents. This book is enchantingly captivating and makes you feel as though you truly know Tim Burton by the end of the book. Mark Salisbury (the editor) has surpassed his job in this book and stays true to Tim Burtons words. If you read this book and enjoy it, I would also recommend the more recent, "Sweeny Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street," written by Mark Salisbury and Tim Burton. Everything created by Tim Burton is truly magnificent and this book will allow you to view a more personal side of Tim Burton through the thing(s) he does best: art.

I knew little about Burton going into this book and I learned a bunch about him. Cool book but not earth shattering. Also, its a little dated now as he has done a lot since that writing.

There are several pages of Tim Burton books that you will find on amazon, but I am extremely happy I chose Burton on Burton. The book is very detailed, and beautifully describes all of Burton's most well known films, including: Nightmare before Christmas, Beetlejuice, Batman, Sleepy Hollow, Corpse Bride, and many more. Plus it is awesome to be able to read a story about Tim Burton, written by the man himself, and you can definitely see it throughout the book. I highly recommend this to any Tim Burton fan like me,or anyone who appreciates any one of his multitude of films. Definitely a must have!!

My friend is a big Nightmare fan and a huge Tim Burton fan so I had to buy this for her and she said it’s amazing.

I bought this book wanting to know a bit more about one of my favorite directors, and I got much more in return. Burton writes about his life as a child growing up in Burbank, California, from his time at CalArts in Valencia, his stay at Disney, and the launching of his own directorial stardum. The forward, which is written by Johnny Depp, tells of their first acquaintance, and almost instantaneous partnership.Burton really does go through much detail of his life, both in career and personal aspects, and I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Certainly a must for Burton fans, but also for anyone interested in knowing more about the creative genius behind such unforgettable masterpieces.
